PERSONALIZED TITLE - The cover of the wedding program should contain your full names and the wedding date.
CEREMONY OUTLINE - The first section of the program contains the ceremony outline. You may need the assistance of your wedding officiant. Every wedding is different, but here are some of the events that should be mentioned in the ceremony outline:
  • Lighting of Candles
  • Seating of Mothers
  • Songs Performed By Soloist or Sung By Everyone
  • Wedding Processional
  • Readings by Additional Speakers
  • Exchange of Vows
  • Blessing & Exchange of Rings
  • Lighting of Unity Candle
  • Final Prayer
  • Declaration of Marriage
  • Introduction of Married Couple
WHO'S WHO - The next section will name the cast of your wedding production. You can list these people by name or by name and relationship to you (for example, "Bridesmaid - Helen, best friend"). You should include the following people:
  • Maid/Matron of Honor
  • Best Man
  • Bridesmaids
  • Groomsmen
  • Ushers
  • Flower Girl
  • Ring Bearer
  • Parents of Bride
  • Parents of Groom
  • Grandparents of Bride
  • Grandparents of Groom
  • Guest Book Guardian
You can also include the names of the officiant, wedding coordinator, organist, singer and any additional helpers.
THANK YOU'S - This is by far the most difficult part of the wedding program. BE CAREFUL! You have to make sure that the acknowledgements are balanced between the two families involved. You don't want to offend anyone. Here is a list of the people that you should thank:
  • Wedding Party
  • Parents
  • Immediate Family of Bride
  • Immediate Family of Groom
  • Out-of-Town Guests
  • Bridesmaid/Groomsmen Runners-Up
  • Anyone who invested time in helping you with your wedding (me excluded!)

You can design your program ahead of time, but don't print them until 1 week before the wedding. A thousand changes can occur just before the wedding. You never know when a groomsman will back out or a singer will be replaced.
Have fun playing with different fonts. There are hundreds of websites that offer FREE fonts for downloading. Check out www.fontfreak.com for choices. Stay away from the standard script fonts. They are too predictable, formal and difficult to read.
Add innovative sections to your wedding program if you have the space. For example, create a fun trivia section containing multiple-choice questions about you and your fiance (how you met, where you went on your first date, how he/she proposed, etc.). Print the answers upside down on the bottom. It will amuse your guests and encourage socializing while they are waiting for the ceremony to begin.
Because these programs are very sentimental keepsakes, you will want to choose a paper that is acid-free so that it won't degrade over time. Check out Papercuts for a wide variety of archival papers!
